Discover How Optimizing Biochemistry Can Halt Macular Degeneration Progression

Hello, I'm Dr. Rozakis. I am an ophthalmologist, and I work with Dr. Brian Bakke, who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry.

I never expected that we would significantly improve the treatment of age-related conditions. It all started 20 years ago when I became very interested in getting to the root causes of disease and treating the aging process. It was exciting to bring such a strategy to my LASIK patients who were starting to get older. I was not only helping them see well but also helping them feel well.

Then serendipity struck when I made a crucial observation that patients we were treating stopped progressing in regard to their macular degeneration. Furthermore, we started to see vision improvement, which is just not supposed to happen, but it did. We also noticed that a patient with wet macular degeneration was improving. Had it not been for the improvement in vision, we would not be here today because vision improvement is not supposed to happen. That motivated us to do a study on hundreds of patients with dry or wet macular degeneration.

We were very pleased to see that our strategy to treat disease at its root causes could do a great deal more than the current standard of care, which barely helped 6% of people progress more slowly. We were very reluctant to get the word out on this because we did not want to be wrong. We reviewed the literature, published our paper, and we continued to treat people and follow those we treated in the study. We experienced success as long as people followed our program precisely.

These observations of stability and improvement taught us very important lessons. The first lesson is to treat the disease as soon as it is identified because if we can stabilize the disease early in its development, then patients would rarely if ever need to experience vision loss and wet macular degeneration where eye injections become necessary.

The problems in the biochemistry of the macula should be thought of as little fires in the macula, which will burn the macula down the longer those fires are allowed to exist. But if we fix the biochemistry sooner rather than later, the macula will do what all parts of the body do, and that is stay healthy and maintain its function.

It is true that we can stabilize vision when it has been lost, and in 50% of cases, we can reverse some of the vision loss, but it's a lot harder to treat people who have already lost a lot of vision. The longer one waits, the greater is the probability of irreversible vision loss.

This reminds me of a powerful lesson from medical history. Back in the 1800s, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis made a groundbreaking observation. He noticed that simply by washing hands before delivering babies or performing surgeries, the number of deaths dropped dramatically. At the time, he couldn't fully explain why this worked, but the connection was clear. Despite the compelling evidence, it took a staggering 20 years for his colleagues to adopt this life-saving practice.


This story highlights a persistent challenge in medicine: implementing effective changes can be incredibly difficult. Even when faced with clear evidence, there's often strong resistance. Semmelweis faced fierce opposition because his peers were reluctant to admit their practices needed improvement.
